Looks like it's been a long while since any of us posted here. Sorry about that! I hope that everyone is doing well & none of you were in the path of the recent tornado's. They hit close enough to where I am that a LYS is collecting squares to make blankets for a couple families. :(
I've been busy here with some remodeling stuff. Time consuming but totally worth it. I do suspect my husband will ban me from going to Lowe's pretty soon though :D He said to me yesterday "I swear every time you go to that store it means more work for me". Yesterdays trip resulted in vinyl siding for the front of the house. Our house is all brick except for 1 small section in the very front & it's wood. Scrape & repaint every few years?? No thanks......slap some vinyl siding on it once & be done with it.
So about that contest........ yep restarting the contests *yay*
This contest will run from 5/5-7/5 and all you have to do is email Rae a picture letting her know you sent a package to Bea. There are no other requirements.....knit or crochet whatever makes you happy for whatever age group and send it in. At the end of the contest I'll put all the names in a hat & let 1 of my boys pick 2 names. The prize will be yarn or yarn related.

Another Day, Another Package

Last week I got another box off to Bea. While cleaning earlier in the week I found the stash of gloves I had accumulated earlier in the year at the end of winter sales. 36 pairs of gloves ranging from toddler size to 1sz fits all :O
The box contained: 15 pairs of 1sz fits all gloves, 12 pairs of toddler sz gloves, 4 long sleeved onesies, 1 sweater vest, 3 1sz fits all hats, 2 pairs of thermal pants & 1 thermal top.

Man was that poor flat rate box stuffed!!

I've found some other things to send in as well but not enough to fill a box yet. On Monday while I was waiting for my prescriptions I found some toddler shoes for $1/pair! :O Well you just can't pass up a deal like that so I got 4 pairs 2 girl & 2 boy. Those will go into the next box.

Hello all! I think I have been busy with my knitting. I have 5 hats done plus one that needs the decreases to be done (will do that today), one of them I knit for my middle daughter but it came out way too small. I also knit a little tiny pair of newborn mittens knit with the same yarn as one of the hats. On top of the hats, I have store bought mittens, adult diabetic socks, lots of newborn socks from Target, a couple of newborn outfits, a couple of thermal underwear for girls, a couple of new toy sets, 2 boxes of applesauce that I thought for my daughters but they were too small, some kid sized store bought hats, 2 bottles of unopened multi vitamins and a lady off of Freecycle gave me a bunch of little boy clothes...and last but not least 2 Yurok Tribe tee shirts for little kids. Those were for my daughters, I weighed the pros and cons of keeping them vs giving them back to the tribe and decided that the Tribe could use them more than me right now.

So that is the contents of my latest box, I think I am gonna have to find a box a little bigger cause I don't think this one will be able to close for shipping!

I found a pattern to knit that is just calling my name very loudly right now, its a newborn baby blanket/stroller blanket and its a pattern I like. Its a 4x1 (4 purl stitch to 1 knit stitch) pattern, I have been working on a sock forever with this pattern and I just really like the look of it. I just need to find the perfect yarn for it.

I think that is it for now, although I have patterns swimming in my head lately. We are moving to Canada this summer so I need to start on some winter hats for my daughters and me plus I am knitting on some shawls with the 2 other ladies here and then there is the sweater that Rae knit that I want to knit to add to another package for the Tribe.

I have 2 more items to add to my box of goodies to send to the charity. The first is a baby sweater my first baby sweater as a matter of fact. The pattern is Baby Blueberry Cardigan. Yes I realize it is missing buttons but I wanted to at least get a picture of it up in case I forget before its shipped out.

The second finished item is a Hurricane hat. I think this is going to be another go to hat pattern for me. Its a fairly easy pattern with a great end result. I think this hat would be great in a variety of colors

Yep sorry about not posting on here for awhile. But I have another box full & will be heading to the post office with it soon. In cleaning out my basement I have come across massive amounts of clothes my boys have outgrown & boy do I ever wish shipping them wouldn't cost so much. But since s&h prices are not coming back down I have just gone through and gathered all of the pajamas to send to Bea. The rest of the clothes are going to a girl in my knitting guild who is a single mom with 2 girls (her girls are a bit tomboyish). I've been going through the boxes as I find them & rewashing everything since they've been in the basement for quite awhile. I gave her a box Monday night & already have 2 more in the back of the van for her *happy dance*. So here are pics of my box contents:

I have finished 2 hats so far this month & now I am working on a baby sweater. I want to accumulate a box full of stuff before I send it out at least enough to fill a flat rate shipping box(man I love those things lol).

My goal was to knock out a hat a month but since I already have 2 done I may try for 3 or for every 2 baby hats make one child/adult hat.

I would like to also apologize to my friend Rae about my lack of activity here on the blog. I am a person who, unless I think I have something to add to it, I tend to stay in the background quite a bit. I also have alot going on at home, DH's job takes him away from home quite a bit and now since he has taken the job of president/general manager of the Canadian arm of the company, he will be gone more until we move to Canada this summer. I am not excusing my lack of being here but just letting you all know that stuff has been happening here. Christina and I both agreed that we will be posting here on a weekly basis so I think that should help.

And I wanted to say again that anything and everything that my mom receives at the clinic is so appreciated by all who have sent boxes in. My mom did send me a pic a day or two ago (had to search for it here on my new laptop) and this is what she sent me "This is from Kathy Fields, in Newcastle, CA. And it has so much for babies. It was just fun going through it, and it will be more fun putting it out in the community! Love, Mom"

Some random thoughts

It has been mentioned that this blog doesn't get updated often enough. And to a certain extent that is true. We tend to leave that all on Rae which isn't fair to her either. However Rae can't update by constantly talking about herself or what she's doing. She does update & post pics whenever she is sent pics of what someone has sent. I for one should really be doing my own post when I send things since I am a co-owner of this here blog & I promise I will be better about pulling my weight here Rae. I had a lot of stuff going on over the Summer/Fall so I wasn't able to send things I had gathered up to send until November. I was still busy knitting baby hats & had bought some items to send as well. I for one am thankful for each & every one of our members who send items in & I know the folks receiving these items are so happy to have them & put them to good use. I tell you I love knitting for babies because you know babies could care less what color you use, they don't care if it looks perfect & you know neither does mom. I can tell you knitting for men....UGH All I ever hear from male friends who want knitted items is "I want it in black or gray" *insert eye roll* yeah ummm no. I have gotten to where I tell them when they ask me to knit for them & I ask what color "if you say black or gray I get to stab you repeatedly with a metal knitting needle" surprisingly enough I don't hear that anymore :D
So while I do still have plenty going on in my life (see my blog if you're interested in hearing all about it) I am still happily knitting away for the babies.... I've almost got enough to fill another box. I'll post pics once I am ready to send another box in. If anyone has any ideas for things they'd like to see here on the blog feel free to email one of us about it. We could share patterns, recipes, whatever & really it can be off topic sometimes :)

I recently finished 2 hats to add to my box of things for the Charity. I am currently working on a baby hat at the moment. I want to get a couple of scarves cranked out also.

The socks were originally meant for my niece but they are made from Superwash wool & my sister is severely allergic to wool & I don't want to take the chance of her breaking out (as I have been told some people can do who are allergic to wool) so I figured next best idea send them out in the box to warm up some little kids feet.

A quick update on the items that have been sent prior to these pictures...they have all been handed out! And my mom is looking forward to getting all the squares too, she is gonna see about getting some help in the seaming and I told her we would all like some pictures, even if its the hands seaming, that would be great! And she is going to also try to get pictures of the kids that come in wearing the items that have been sent, I think it would be good to see them being used.

Alphabet Blanket Idea..

This is also posted over on Ravelry but just in case someone reads this & isn't a member there I wanted to post this information here too.

I had an idea & figured I would run it past everyone here to see what you all thought. I thought we could make an alphabet blanket. Everyone can pick a letter & knit it up then send it to Figaro she will keep track of them until we have all the pieces we need & then send them off to her mom for seaming.

In total we need 28 squares 26 which are the alphabet & the other 2 will be the state of California one will go before the A & the other will go after the Z. I figure there are 40 some odd members so there are enough that each person can knit one but if we don’t get enough people we can always pick up the extra letters.

So with that being said I will give everyone a choice of what letter they want to pick sorry first come first serve just post below what letter you want.
There are a few rules(yea I can hear the awwws)

Knit squares on size 7 needles please.
Use only acrylic yarn please.
As for color choices nothing to dark or variegated we would like the letters to be able to be seen please.

I will give everyone until the end of the month to say they want to help & pick letters then we will go from there with whatever letters are left.

I got these pictures in the email the other day from two people Kathy & Danielle. You all are amazing with all the donations.

The first picture comes from Kathy she found a lot of stuff at Marshalls's in the email Kathy told me what she got in the email "I found a great sale today at Marshall's. Two blankets, 7 onsies, 2 sleepers or whatever they are called and a fleece hoodie w/ pants.
There are 2 more blankets, but they are already packed.

I have a box full of non knitted items that is going out today. I know we are focusing on babies for these next couple months but I have found a pair of thermal pj's & some hats my kids have worn a few times but no longer fit so I washed them & am sending them along with a pair of gloves I've bought to go with each one. Also sending some store bought receiving blankets, baby snow suit & 4 long sleeved onesies. And as of today we have a facebook group! Contest in progress

I hope everyone is staying safe & warm in all this cold weather. I wanted to let everyone know that the first contest is now in progress. It will run from Jan.1-Feb28 & we are focusing on ages newborn-6 months. We will move up in ages as we go so that no age group is left out. The prize this time will be a skein of Patons classic wool & some chocolate. Remember all you have to do to be in the running is send a package off sometime between now & Feb 28th & let us know by either commenting here on the blog or emailing Rae. How are you doing out there? Its cold over here on the mid-atlantic coast...I think its around 26 degrees out there and that is not factoring in the wind...BRRR!

Talked to my mom over the holiday break and she has received 3 boxes! One was from me, it was all store bought stuff, a few things from Big Lots, some store bought knit wear that my daughters used last year and I found some great snowsuit type outwear for a boy and a girl along with some newborn onsie undershirts for a boy and girl. I even found a preemie shirt there too! So I boxed up that stuff and a few more things and sent them off...

This was a box that she received from Isabelle all the way from Northern Ireland! I love that, people from all over the globe are sending in stuff to a little tribe in Northern California...

And here is the last box she received, from Marianne in Florida...

Thank you to all of you who has helped us out here, it is so cold there now, all of this wonderful stuff will go to people who really do need it. And because of all of you, they will still know that people out there do care about them!

This post is actually from Figaro blogger didn't want to cooperate with her so I am posting it for her

I know it seems like not much is happening here but there are great things going on back in California where my mom lives. She has been receiving more packages AND as a result of all this...pregnant moms are coming in and asking for the meetings where they receive the knitted items!! That was the whole purpose of this blog, was to find a way to inspire these ladies to come into the clinic and start up with prenatal care...and its working!

Now I am going to try and explain what the program does but there is a chance I will be incorrect, I will do my best and will let you all know more as my mom sends my stuff. The program name is NaAs (long a in the middle, like "ahh" and a little bit of a pause), it means "baby basket" in the Yurok language. The moms meet with the person in charge of the program in each clinic (there are 5 I think throughout the county) and in the meeting, they talk about what will be going on with the mom's bodies, the babies growth, any programs they might qualify for, I am sure there is more but that is what I remember my mom saying and of course any and all questions the moms and dads might have. Its a long meeting too, about 1 1/2 hours or so. And at the end of the meeting, the parents to be get to pick a bag for the new baby. This is where our knit hats come in and this is what they look like ~

And this is a example of what is in the bags, the items here are from the yellow bag in the back ~

As you can see, they put a nice selection of donated items in the bags to help out the moms with the little ones. The matching socks and hat were knit by my friend who lives in Florida, don’t they look adorable! (Hi Auburnchick!)

She has also received 2 more packages from you knitters out there. This is one that was sent by another friend of mine who lives up in Vermont, I LOVE that she sent in 2 Entrelac hats! I have yet to even think about trying to knit Entrelac.

This is the second package she received, they are from another knitter who lives in New Castle, CA.

Look at all the great items she included! The crayons, the toys, the clothes and blanket…just love it!

Now for a email that mom sent me about the affect our knitting is starting to have with the people up there :

“I just wanted you to know how much we appreciate what is turning up on our doorstep. I have sent some pictures. But there is more. We are able to give the gift bags to our NaAs patients. (I enclosed photos of them) And they are such a hit, that for the first time, we have Moms to be, actually asking for the interview.

Then there are the wonderful things that cannot fit in the Moms bags. Along with the newborns, come siblings, and even Moms who could use unexpected gifts. I have always thought that we love the newborns, but those sisters and brothers need fussing over too, so we can do that. Even the Moms can be fussed over.

And the clothes, I keep them for the ones that just have nothing. Or just need something.

So, your friends who have so warmly responded to our needs have done more then they know. Just means a lot.”

So, as you all can see, the items that you send in, whether they be handknit, machine knit or something other than a knit item, they are having the exact effect we were going for. The moms to be are asking for the NaAs meetings! That gets them in the door for prenatal care, and that gives those babies a much better chance of being born healthy!

She has been receiving items from all over the place, there is a box on its way from Hawaii right now. From Hawaii! Not to mention the beautiful scarf from Scotland! When I stop and think about all these strangers are helping out the Yurok Tribe, well it just makes me tear up some…thank you all so much!!

In the interest of keeping things interesting Debbie & I have decided to start having some contests. The basic idea is we will have say a 2 month period where we will focus on sending specific items ie: baby hats or hats/mittens/scarves for certain age groups, socks, well you get the idea. Winners will be picked by putting names into a bowl & drawing them out since for any number of reasons some people are able to contribute more than others but since everyone is contributing everyone should have a chance to win something. Prizes will be things like gift cards to Michaels/Joann/etc or a package with yarn & chocolate (yumm). All you have to do to be entered into the contests is post a comment saying "I mailed a package" or you can email Rae whatever you feel more comfortable doing

Also if the items being focused on for the contest are something you can't knit (let's face it not everyone likes to or can knit socks) you can either knit whatever makes you happy which is what we're all already doing, buy said items, or Debbie just told me the other day books for young children are needed on the reservation so feel free to send some books. This is just a way to make things fun & to say thanks for all you do so please don't feel pressured to make things you don't enjoy making. This also helps those who need things like deadlines & structure *raises hand & admits to being a scatterbrain who needs structure* I also set up a spreadsheet so everyone can see all the progress. I broke it up into age groups as well as items so that if say 10 people want to knit hats we can look at the sheet & hopefully spread it out a bit more. Again these are just ideas running through my head & not a way to pressure anyone. Scarves....

These are the 2 scarves I have made so far the pattern is called Scrunchable Scarf. I made these on size 10 needles with Premier Yarns(Deborah Norville) in Chunky Weight Yarn. The brown color is Chocolate & the red is Berry Burst.

She has received my box I sent and 2 more! They are all so impressed with such generosity from all you wonderful knitters! There are 5 Indian Health Clinics all throughout the county and she thinks she has enough to share some with the other clinics, that is WONDERFUL!! I won't post another pic of mine because I just posted one in the last post but I will post the other two pictures, one box is from California and the other is from North Carolina. The box from North Carolina had a lot of stuff in them, not only knitted items either, well take a look for yourself!

See! I told you it was a lot of stuff! Thank you so much for all the items, they will be used by some very grateful people who are in need!

My mom is also going to be sending me a brochure of the program and I will either type out the info here or/and try to scan the brochure and post it here, that way all of you can get a better idea of what they are doing there.

I will let you know that I am trying to post when she is able to send me a picture of the items she recieved, she is not in the office on Mondays and Wednsdays so it all depends on when she is there, when she is able to take a picture and upload them to her computer then email them to me.

Its been almost 2 months to the day that my friends and I started this blog and in that time, United Indian Health Clinic has recieved 9 or 10 boxes of handknit items, toiletries and various other items! Thank you all so much for your long distance show of affection!

Shipping my hats and other items out tomorrow

I finally finished the hat and it is now all packaged up and will be mailed off to my mom tomorrow. There are 4 store bought hats that I got from the dollar store, 2 packs of toothbrushes along with some toothpaste, hair ties, soaps and lotions from my husbands stays at hotels and 5 1st class packs that he gets from his airline travels. The matching hat and sock set was mailed to me from my friend Auburnchick and they are soo soft!

I will be starting another hat this weekend but at the same time will be knitting up some hats for my daughters.

My mom just emailed me with a picture of hats that she has received. This is from someone in Washington state. She loves them and a thank you card will be going out within a day or so.

She also received a box of hats from someone in CA from the previous post, the first picture but housekeeping took the box before she was able to get the address off of it. I am contacting that person now and as soon as I can get the address, my mom will get it and a thank you card will go out soon after.

I do know that she has already handed out some of the hats to pregnant moms that have come in and they (and the dads too) love them! The new mom and dad that received the blanket were pleased to receive such a beautiful blanket & was touched that people from all over are sending items to their reservation.

I am about ready to send off my own box of hats and some toiletry items that I have been picking up. My husband flys quite a bit and sometimes he gets in 1st class, he gets some items there to freshen up on the flight but instead of using them, he would give them to me. I did not know what to do with them but now they are going to my mom, she will know who to give them to. I will post a pic of all the items as soon as I finish one more hat.

anyone These hats were knit using the same pattern as the last hat picture I posted. The two on the left were knit using Patons Beehive Big Boy & the two on the right are colorway Natural Boy.
For the square I used Caron 1# Midnight Blue & this pattern I love dishcloth patterns & this one caught my eye so I decided it would make a nice square for a blanket. Debbie's mom has said if anyone wants to knit squares for blankets that she can seam them up. My square is a 12x12 - I thought the less seaming the better. However any size squares will be used so if squares are your thing feel free to send them :)

baby hat #4 & in my opinion my best one yet :) This is my favorite pattern so far as well - it's so quick & easy. I used Patons Beehive Baby Sport in Natural Boy & this free pattern. Also for those of you reading this that are also on ravelry we now have a group over there: knit-for-hope

This colorful hat was knit by Christina the yarn she used is Hobby Lobby Sweet Delight Baby & she got the pattern from her LYS Yarn Explosion..

These two hats were knit by Debbie. The pink one is made from Caron Simply Soft & the blue one is made from Red Heart Soft Baby Steps . You can find the pattern for the pink hat here & the pattern for the blue hat here.

Thank you for taking the time to stop by & read about what we are trying to do for the residents of The Yurok Tribe on the The Yurok Reservation. I am going to try & answer some of your question here in this post but please feel free to email us at knittingforhope@gmail.com.

1. The tribe colors are red & black but all colors are appreciated.

2. Please make sure the yarn you use is washable.

3. If you knit something in Wool please put it in a bag with a note saying its made from wool

4. They are in need of hats & scarves for adults/kids & hats for babies.

5. If you are worried about the cost of shipping you can order flat rate shipping boxes from the post office & send them out that way.

6. If you decide to knit something please email us a picture so we can post it here love to see your work.

7. In addition to scarves & hats, shawls, lapghans, any & all baby items as well as basic toiletries are needed

8. There is no deadline so you can send things anytime you want

You can mail them to the address below they will be delivered to Debbie's mom & distributed out to everyone.
